Barbara Wirostko, MD, Medical Advisor
Barbara joined EyeGate in conjunction with its March 2016 acquisition of Jade Therapeutics, where she was a co-founder and served as Chief Scientific Officer since the Company’s inception in 2012. She is a former Senior Medical Director at Pfizer, where she led a successful EU regulatory EMA filing for Xalatan in pediatric glaucoma. She is a board certified ophthalmologist and a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In addition to her role at EyeGate, Dr. Wirostko maintains an academic research and clinical practice with the University of Utah, Moran Eye Center, as a Clinical Adjunct Associate Professor in Ophthalmology and as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Bioengineering. Dr. Wirostko holds an MD from and completed her residency training at Columbia University, and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology (with distinction) from Cornell University.
Daniel Durrie, MD
Dr. Daniel Durrie, MD, is a board certified ophthalmologist. He is a Clinical Professor and Director of Refractive Surgery Services at the University of Kansas Medical Center, and the Director of the Ophthalmic Refractive Surgery Fellowship program. Dr. Durrie founded the Nebraska Lions Eyebank in 1979 and served as the Medical Director. Dr. Durrie is the Founder and President of Durrie Vision, and has served on the Board of Directors of Eyebank Association of America. Currently, he serves on the board of directors of the International Society of Refractive Surgery. He has participated in over 150 FDA clinical studies and has authored over 150 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles. He received his M.D. and completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Nebraska, graduating with distinction. He completed a Corneal Fellowship with Filkins Eye Institute in Omaha, Nebraska. Dr. Durrie was named one of the 50 “Most Influential Ophthalmologists in the World” by the Cataract and Refractive Surgery Magazine.
C. Stephen Foster, MD
C. Stephen Foster, MD, is Founder and Director of the Massachusetts Eye Research and Surgery Institute (MERSI), and Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Foster is Founder and President of the Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Foundation. In 1980 he created the Ocular Immunology and Uveitis Service at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and in 1984 founded the Uveitis and Ocular Immunology Fellowship Training Program. He is the author of over 500 publications, has won numerous awards and has been repeatedly listed in America’s Top Doctors and Best Doctors in America. Dr. Foster holds a BS degree in Chemistry from Duke University and a MD from the Duke University School of Medicine.
Paul Karpecki, OD, FAAO
Dr. Karpecki is a prominent voice in optometry with over 20 years of experience. Currently he serves as Director of Cornea Services for Kentucky Eye Institute in Lexington KY, The Ocular Surface Disease Center at the Gaddie Eye Centers in Louisville KY as well as an Associate Professor at the Kentucky College of Optometry. In 2016, he was appointed as co-chair of the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society Symposium in Montpellier, France and served as a member of the Diagnosis Sub-committee for TFOS DEWS II. He is also chief clinical editor and director of clinical content for Review of Optometry, as well as chairman of the New Technology and Treatment Conferences. He serves on the board for the charitable organization Optometry Giving Sight and has delivered over 1,000 lectures and authored over 1,000 papers. Previously, he served as co-chair for the Dry Eye Summit, Director for the CJO Optometric Dry Eye Guidelines for Eye Care.
Dr. Karpecki earned his doctor of optometry degree from Indiana University. He completed a fellowship in medical cornea and refractive surgery from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. He was one of two optometrists appointed to the Delphi International Society at Wilmer-Johns Hopkins, which included the top 25 dry eye experts in the world.
Randall J Olson, MD
Randall J Olson, MD, is a board certified ophthalmologist specializing in research dealing with intra-ocular lens complications, teleophthalmology and corneal transplantation techniques. Dr. Olson is a Professor, Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and CEO of the John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah. He is the author of more than 300 publications and served on several editorial boards. Dr. Olson also serves as President of the Chairs of Ophthalmology organization for the United States and Canada. He was selected as one of the 15 best cataract surgeons in the United States by Ophthalmology Times. He received his medical degree from University of Utah School of Medicine and completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of California – Los Angeles.
Jean-Marie Parel, PhD
Jean-Marie Parel, PhD, is Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of the Ophthalmic Biophysics Center at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. He also holds an appointment to the Henri and Flore Lesieur Chair in Ophthalmology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and a secondary appointment in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Parel’s research interests include developing novel polymers, laser systems, devices for advanced ophthalmic diagnostics and therapy, and the study of optical and mechanical properties of ocular tissues. He is a Board member of Adventus Technology, an Honorary Faculty of Université de Liège School of Medicine (Belgium), and an Honorary Faculty of Université de Paris. Dr. Parel holds a PhD from the Université de Paris.
Victor Perez, MD
Dr. Perez is a board certified ophthalmologist, professor of Ophthalmology at Duke University and a recognized clinician-scientist investigator. With over 25 years of professional experience, he has specialized in ocular immunology, uveitis, corneal and external diseases, corneal transplant surgery, ocular surface diseases, keratoprostheses, complex cataracts and intraocular lens implantation. He is also a director of Duke Eye Center’s newly launched Ocular Immunology Center.
Previously he served as a Professor of Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and held the Walter G. Ross Chair in Ophthalmic Research. Dr. Perez has been affiliated with companies such as Alcon Laboratories, Bausch & Lomb, Shire Pharmaceuticals, Allergan, Eyedesis Biosciences and OBT Inc. Dr. Perez received his medical degree from University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. He completed his fellowship in immunology, ocular immunology as well as cornea and uveitis from Harvard Medical School. He is a member of The American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Michael Raizman, MD
Michael Raizman, MD, is a specialist in laser vision correction and treatment of the cornea with Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston. He is also an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Tufts University School of Medicine where he has directed the Corneal Fellowship Training Program. Dr. Raizman has also served on the full-time faculty of Harvard Medical School. He is on the editorial board of the Archives of Ophthalmology and Therapeutic Updat es in Ophthalmology, and is author of over 60 medical articles. Dr. Raizman holds a MD from the University of Michigan Medical School.
Vance Thompson, MD
Dr. Vance Thompson is renowned globally for his thought leadership in laser vision correction and advanced cataract surgery. Currently, he is the Director of Refractive Surgery for Vance Thompson Vision in Sioux Falls, Idaho and a Professor of Ophthalmology at the Sanford USD School of Medicine. Dr. Thompson has been instrumental in research and development of the most advanced corneal and refractive technologies and techniques associated with laser and implant vision correction. He has served as the medical monitor lead or principal investigator in over 70 FDA monitored clinical trials studying laser and implant surgery. Additionally, Dr. Thompson has lectured and published numerous papers and book chapters on improvements in laser and intraocular surgery, including being co-author of the textbook Refractive Surgery.
Dr. Thompson received his BS in Chemistry and his MD degree from the University of South Dakota. Following the accomplishment of his ophthalmology residency at the University of Missouri/Columbia, he completed a fellowship in Refractive and Cataract Surgery from Hunkeler Eye Centers in Kansas City.
