Core TechnologyEye Disease: A Growing Unmet Medical NeedDespite material advances in ophthalmic medicine in recent decades, there remains significant opportunity to improve patient care, lower cost of services and treat sizable unmet medical needs. As life expectancy increases, so does the incidence of ophthalmic disease such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, to name a few. In addition, a significant number of people are afflicted annually with eye infections, seasonal allergies, retinal disorders and dry eye. The high prevalence of these diseases has created significant opportunities for companies to develop innovative medicines and technology that improve patient diagnosis and care. At the core of our approach at EyeGate Pharma is the understanding that for medicine to be effective, it needs to be able to get to the anatomy of the Eye that is responsible for the disease. We believe the EyeGate® II Delivery System has the potential to make a meaningful contribution in addressing these needs. About Iontophoresis as a Drug Delivery ApproachIontophoresis is an active method of drug delivery in which an electrical field created by a low-level of electrical current is used to ionize a drug and to modify the permeability of the cells so that the drug can be delivered through different tissues to targeted areas. Iontophoretic drug delivery is not new. It has been well studied and in fact, FDA approved for dermatologic applications, as an example. We believe that EyeGate Pharma is the only company to have successfully used iontophoresis to safely and effectively deliver medication to both the anterior and posterior segments of the human eye. |
